At Revelstoke Dental Centre, we offer our Revelstoke patients BOTOX® for facial rejuvenation and TMJ treatment.
BOTOX® is a trade name for botulinum toxin, which comes in the form of a purified protein.
The process behind the pain-relieving abilities of BOTOX® is simple. BOTOX® is injected into the facial muscles and blocks the transmitters between the motor nerves that stimulate the muscle. There is no loss of sensory feeling in the muscles. Once the motor nerve endings are interrupted, the muscle cannot contract.
When the muscle is unable to contract, areas that were previously tense or overactive from either stress or overuse, get the relief they need. Your body is no longer sending (and receiving) multiple signals from your neurotransmitters and your muscles relax.
This relaxation relieves the symptoms associated with the muscles involved in your pain.
Facial rejuvenation is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that temporarily reduces frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet near the eyes.
By temporarily blocking the nerve impulses, the muscles that cause wrinkles relax, giving the skin a smoother, and more refreshed appearance.
Used in the dental setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified protein, small doses of medication block the release of a chemical called acetylcholine by nerve cells that signal muscle contraction. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles’ ability to contract, existing expression lines are smoothed out, and in most cases, are nearly invisible in 7 to 14 days.
One 30 minute treatment and a few tiny injections block the nerve impulses and relaxes the muscles. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away. Since the treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the line at the injection site, it has no effect on other elements of facial expression. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, allowing for normal feeling in the treated areas.
Our Revelstoke facial rejuvenation patients usually see their results last 3 to 4 months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects often begin to last longer.
There is no permanent side effects known with facial rejuvenation therapy for facial wrinkles. However, there are several temporary side effects which can occur, including:
The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to a localized pain disorder called temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome.
BOTOX® may help treat symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. You may benefit most from this treatment if other methods haven’t worked.
